This year I am participating in my first half-marathon at the Baltimore Running Festival. I have decided to join Pacing for Parkinson's in an effort to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson's disease. The funds raised will support the Johns Hopkins Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center to improve patient care, advance research, and expand outreach and education programs. Parkinson's disease is the second most common neurodegenerative brain disorder and affects more than half a million individuals in the United States, with 50,000-60,000 new cases each year. With its decline, Parkinson's leaves individuals with a slow gait, rigid limbs, tremor, shuffling, and lack of balance.

As a perioperative nurse in neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, I have seen firsthand the impact on our patients. I have also been able to be directly involved with the fascinating technologies that allow for individuals with Parkinson's to lead relatively normal lives! I am continuously inspired by the interventions that are available. When I was considering fundraising efforts to motivate my half-marathon training, I could not have found a better opportunity than to join Pacing for Parkinson's. Please consider supporting me in my training as well as my fundraising efforts.
